I compared the BMW 650 Dakar to The KLR in 2011 when I was looking to buy. The BMW was about the same bike in most ways except horse power. 50BMW to 37KLR. Weight, suspension, comfort, and durability seemed about the same. I went with the KLR for its ease and lower cost of repairs. Most owners can do their own work on the KLR and aftermarket

Basically the 650GS unit was subject to an absurd German patent by BMW, they claimed a patent over the combining of a filter with a regulator into a single cannister. BMW Dealers only were gaining access to the G65OX unit which unlike the 650GS sits in the fuel tank, I have some limited info on it and some owners have obtained replacements from

Although the new BMW G 650 X is around the corner and appears (on paper) to be an improvement (lighter by about 55Lbs (~25 kilos)), I just bought a loaded '03 Dakar (for a great price) and really enjoy it. I can comfortably cruise the autobahn at 120-140kph (74-87 mph) all day long without the excessive buzz a lot of singles possess.

I have an 03 F650 GS that I just purchased used a month ago. It's got about 50k miles on it. So far it's been running fantastically, but I've been searching all over for any information on repairing, upgrading, maintaining, and purchasing good aftermarket parts for the bike. There doesn't seem to be much out there.
